Planning Christmas With Your Children After Separation & Divorce

We've touched on how you might spend your first Christmas following separation, so let's now focus on your kids, as the changes resulting from your separation, also impacts them. Christmas is a day centred around family, and each family has its own traditions. These traditions are bound to change now that you are separated, so it’s important to explain to your kids how Christmas will look this year and, in the years, to come.

Here are some of our tips for navigating Christmas this year:

*Be Understanding*

Listen to your kid’s concerns about Christmas and show them that you understand. Christmas is a significant day for them, often filled with excitement about Santa and Christmas presents. Offer words of encouragement, reassuring them that while Christmas may not be the same this year, you will create new traditions and memories together.

*Be Cordial with Your Ex*

No one enjoys drama, especially during the holidays. Regardless of your feelings toward your ex, it's essential to maintain a friendly demeanour for their sake. You don’t want them to feel any tension between you on this special day.

*Keep the Family Involved*

Even if your traditions are changing, try to keep extended family involved, especially if your kids won’t see them during the holidays. Consider sending a card or arranging a FaceTime call or a phone call to wish them a Merry Christmas.

*Help Your Child Choose a Present for Their Other Parent*

Encourage your kids to pick out a present for their other parent. While this may feel challenging for you, it shows that you care about their experience. Children sense negative feelings, so helping them choose a gift may ease any tension. While you’re at it, buy something nice for yourself to open on Christmas morning.

*Be Child-Focused*

Remember, this is about your kids. Any negative feelings you have about your ex should be set aside during the holiday season.

Take a break! Your kids will appreciate your effort now and in the future. You've got this!
